Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street
This story follows a man who returns to London after years in exile, quietly opens a barbershop, and — with the help of the owner of the downstairs pie shop — begins to get his revenge on the aristocrats who banished him. Johnny Depp and Helena Bonham Carter are at their (pasty and kinda creepy) best.
Alvin and the Chipmunks
Jason Lee (whose name is frequently Earl) stars as a songwriter who can’t seem to find much success. . . until those three lovable and familiar chipmunks pop up and lend their squeaky vocal stylings to his songs. The hilarious David Cross costars.
Kite Runner
Back from last week, this is the movie adaptation of the bestselling book about a man who returns to his homeland of Afghanistan after years in the US. He plans to rescue his friend’s troubled son, but his old country’s Taliban rule stands in the way. Khalid Abdall and Atossa Leoni star.
I Am Legend
Set in a barren and futuristic Manhattan, Will Smith is pretty much the last man on earth. (All of the others were affected by a virus that turned them into monsters.) Now all he has to do is find a cure and save the entire human race, while fighting off said monsters.
Enchanted
James Marsden and Amy Adams star in this seriously cute story about what happens to a princess when an evil witch kicks her out of her fairytale homeland and into modern day New York. Adams plays the lovely princess who finds love, adventure and lots of traffic.
Atonement
In this faithful adaptation of Ian McEwan’s bestseller, Keira Knightley and James McAvoy light/heat/steam up the screen as lovers who are torn apart when Knightley’s on-screen younger sister (Saoirse Ronan) accuses McAvoy’s character of a crime he didn’t commit.
